The Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad<\/strong> discussed the report of Higher Diploma student Yusr Waleed Khalid<\/strong>, titled:
\u201cThe Relationship Between SARS-CoV-2 and Liver Infection\u201d<\/strong>, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Zainab Hikmat Aboud<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The report aimed to study the association between liver damage and the risks it faces during SARS-CoV-2 infection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The findings highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong> caused significant disruptions to global healthcare systems, leading to major setbacks in healthcare infrastructure worldwide.<\/p>\n

The report further demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 infection primarily targets the respiratory system<\/strong>, often resulting in severe disease known as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)<\/strong>, which can be fatal for some individuals. Although the lungs are the primary organ affected by COVID-19, the clinical spectrum of the disease varies widely, ranging from asymptomatic cases to respiratory failure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\ud83d\udd39 Liver Damage in COVID-19 Patients:<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • Due to dysregulated immune responses<\/strong> and various affected mechanisms, the liver may also suffer from hepatocellular injury<\/strong> and ischemic liver dysfunction<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • The severity of liver damage is correlated with disease severity<\/strong>, making the liver one of the frequently affected organs in COVID-19 patients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \ud83d\udd39 Potential Causes of Liver Damage:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Direct viral injury from SARS-CoV-2<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • Secondary multifactorial effects<\/strong>, including:\n
        \n
      • Hepatotoxicity from COVID-19 treatments<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      • Cytokine storm syndrome<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      • Multiple organ dysfunction and sepsis<\/strong>, which can lead to multi-organ failure<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        \ud83d\udd39 Recommendations:<\/strong><\/p>\n

          \n
        • Caution should be exercised when treating COVID-19 patients with pre-existing liver conditions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
        • Alternative treatment strategies should be explored<\/strong>, as currently available medications have limitations due to their toxicity and associated risks<\/strong>, particularly in the context of COVID-19.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          This study highlights the need for further research<\/strong> to improve treatment approaches and mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on liver health.<\/p>\n
