The Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad<\/strong> discussed the Higher Diploma report of student Khansa Safaa Abdul Jabbar<\/strong>, titled:
“Favism: Symptoms, Causes, and Management,”<\/strong> under the supervision of Professor Dr. Majid Shayea Hamdallah<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Objectives of the Study:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The study aimed to:
\ud83d\udd39 Define Favism<\/strong>, including its symptoms, physiological, and genetic causes<\/strong>.
\ud83d\udd39 Explain the physiological mechanisms of Vicine and Convicine compounds<\/strong>.
\ud83d\udd39 Highlight the relationship between fava bean consumption and Favism disease<\/strong>.
\ud83d\udd39 Review methods to reduce Vicine and Convicine levels<\/strong>, which are responsible for triggering Favism.<\/p>\n

Key Findings:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\ud83d\udd39 Favism is a hereditary form of hemolytic anemia caused by a deficiency in the G6PD enzyme<\/strong>. This deficiency can lead to a sudden destruction of red blood cells<\/strong>, resulting in hemolytic anemia and jaundice<\/strong> after consuming fava beans.
\ud83d\udd39 Favism is a widespread disease<\/strong>, affecting 400\u2013600 million people worldwide<\/strong>. It is more common in males than females<\/strong> and is diagnosed more frequently in children<\/strong> than in adults. Additionally, infants can develop symptoms if their mothers consume fava beans during pregnancy or breastfeeding<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Recommendations:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

  • There is a correlation between populations with a high prevalence of G6PD deficiency genes and regions where fava bean consumption is common<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • G6PD plays a crucial role in producing the reduced form of glutathione<\/strong>, which is essential for maintaining and protecting red blood cells<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
