The Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology<\/strong> organized a scientific symposium titled \u201cFoot-and-Mouth Disease: Reality and Prevention\u201d<\/strong>, presented by Professor Dr. Amina Naima Al-Thuwaini<\/strong> and Assistant Professor Dr. Nagham Jawad<\/strong>, under the management of Assistant Professor Dr. Zahraa Ahmed Shakir<\/strong>, with the attendance of the dean, professors, and staff of the institute.<\/p>\n

The symposium aimed to shed light on the history, risks, symptoms, and prevention methods<\/strong> of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), along with providing key recommendations to curb its spread.<\/p>\n

Overview of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD)<\/strong><\/h3>\n

FMD is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals<\/strong>, including cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, deer, and, in some cases, camels. Recent studies indicate that 77% of farm animals<\/strong> in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia<\/strong> are at risk, making it one of the most serious threats to food security and livestock trade<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

FMD in Iraq<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The first recorded outbreak in Iraq occurred in 1937 in Sulaymaniyah<\/strong> and later spread to the southern regions. The country has experienced repeated outbreaks over the decades, with several viral strains recorded, including A, O, and Asia 1<\/strong>, between 1952 and 2013<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Symptoms of FMD<\/strong><\/h3>\n
    \n
  • Sudden high fever<\/strong> and severe illness.<\/li>\n
  • Ulcers and blisters<\/strong> in the mouth, tongue, gums, hooves, and sometimes the udder.<\/li>\n
  • Foamy, sticky saliva<\/strong> resembling thick threads.<\/li>\n
  • Difficulty walking, lameness, and reduced mobility<\/strong> due to hoof lesions.<\/li>\n
  • General weakness, loss of appetite, and decreased milk production<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Prevention and Control Measures<\/strong><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Vaccination<\/strong> is the most effective preventive measure, requiring a vaccine matching the circulating viral strain<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • Boiling milk before consumption<\/strong> and wearing gloves when handling raw meat<\/strong> to minimize risk.<\/li>\n
    • Raising awareness among farmers and livestock breeders<\/strong> about the importance of reporting infections and adhering to vaccination programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Human Risk and Final Recommendations<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      Modern studies confirm that FMD rarely affects humans<\/strong>, but transmission may occur through unboiled milk or undercooked meat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      In conclusion, the symposium emphasized the importance of public awareness<\/strong> in combating the spread of the disease and called for strengthening vaccination programs<\/strong> to protect livestock and mitigate economic and health impacts.<\/p>\n
