Under the auspices of the Dean of the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology for Postgraduate Studies / University of Baghdad, Assistant Professor Dr. Saif Dawoud Al-Ahmar, and in cooperation with the Women’s Empowerment Unit headed by Dr. Wasan Abdul Razzaq and the Higher Institute for Security and Administrative Development at the Ministry of Interior, a scientific symposium was held entitled “Drugs and their Impact on Society And that was in the discussion room at the institute, where the lecture was delivered by the lecturer at the institute, Dr. (Wassan Abdul Razzaq Gharbi), Lieutenant Colonel Ammar Jalal Muhammad, and Captain Wissam Adel Ghadban from the Higher Institute for Security and Administrative Development at the Ministry of Interior.
The symposium was attended by the members of the Institute’s Council, and a group of faculty, associates and students of the Institute, while Dr. Muhammad Al-Obeidi and Dr. Saif Mohsen from the Iraqi National Intelligence Service, Brigadier General Dr. Sabah Rashid Wadi from the Higher Institute for Security and Administrative Development, and human rights dean Yas Khader Jahishi / Director of Media and Public Relations at the Institute attended the symposium. The symposium aimed to provide a brief explanation about drugs and their dangers to the individual and society, as well as their effects on the family entity, the economic and social effects, and the laws related to holding drug abusers and promoters accountable.
Dr. Wassan Abdul Razzaq talked about drugs and their harm to the health of the individual and society by addressing the concept of drug abuse and presenting definitions about it, as well as its types and factors that lead to its abuse. During the symposium, a number of evidences indicating the personality of addicts were presented. It also reviewed a number of methods of prevention and treatment of drugs. In turn, Lieutenant Colonel Ammar Jalal Muhammad from the Higher Institute for Security and Administrative Development presented pictures of the plants that are used to extract drugs and the basic materials that help in their manufacture, and presented a diagram of the methods of their transmission, trade and extraction. He referred to the effect of drugs on the individual and its contribution to the destruction of the family and how it causes domestic violence crimes. He stressed the importance of conducting awareness campaigns by the concerned institutions.
