The Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology was established in 1999 to establish a basis in the field of genetic engineering and biotechnologies and provide academic and research staff to spread the knowledge of these sciences among Iraqi universities. The institute is proud that it has several academics and researchers who received their high degrees from it, and they are found in many ministries such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Health, Industry, Environment, the Ministry of Higher Education, and Scientific Research.

The period of more than 12 years since the institute’s founding makes it clear to every knowledgeable person that it has an ascending and noble scientific path. The number of applicants to study at the institute has increased from a few to hundreds to compete for a limited number of seats provided by the institute. The number of students admitted to the study also grew to more than fifty annually compared to the previous years. Today, studying at the institute to get a doctorate, master’s degree, and higher diploma is a dream for many outstanding students. Moreover, the scientific path of the institute is replete with other scientific achievements, such as publishing research in international journals with an impact factor, participation in international conferences, seminars, and workshops, in addition to local scientific meetings or unique conferences held by the institute, the most recent of which is the World Conference on Genetic Engineering. The institute was also distinguished by the establishment of dozens of science courses that contributed to community service through the development of practical scientific capabilities of community cadres, as well as the completion of several investment projects and participation in the completion of joint projects with the Ministries of Agriculture and Environment in the field of genetic maps of Iraqi species and the development of fish wealth and animal.

And let’s not forget the institute’s effective contribution to the establishment of molecular genetics and genetic engineering laboratories in other faculties and the institute’s possession of a solid and widespread scientific journal. Talking about a long and distinguished path, as our institute does, is not enough for that short word. Still, we say that we seek to enter the fertile field from the outputs of the scientific work that has been accomplished and to enter into some advanced fields of modern science, such as gene therapy, stem cells, human tissue production, and the production of genetically modified species, with medical and economic returns. In conclusion, we ask God for success to reach these noble goals to integrate science with society, and from God is success and goodness.
