Professor at the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology for the Postgraduate Studies/University of Baghdad, Professor Dr. Essam Fadel Alwan Al-Jumaili, participated in the nineteenth international conference of the Arab Chemists Union Society, which was held at the National Research Center – Cairo University and under the slogan “The Horizon of Applied Sciences for Quality of Life and Sustainability”.
More than 90 research papers in the fields of biochemistry, environmental chemistry, organic chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, and polymer chemistry, as well as 40 scientific publications from various Arab and foreign countries, also participated in the conference.
Dr. Essam’s participation included presenting his scientific research titled: “The relationship between vitamin D and C-reactive protein with coronavirus-19 patients in elderly Iraqi patients.”
The study aimed to find a correlation between the level of vitamin D in a sample of Iraqi coronavirus patients compared to healthy people and to evaluate the level of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the blood in patients suffering from COVID-19.
The results of the study showed a decrease in the average vitamin D level of less than (30 ng/ml). The mean (M) ± standard error of the mean (SE) for C-reactive protein (CRP) was in (ng/ml) For coronavirus patients (1.98 ± 0.15), while for the control group (0.67 ± 0.04), a very significant difference (P<0.001) was found between patients and control groups.
The study noted a weak negative correlation (-0.189) with non-significant differences (P = 0.224) between vitamin D and active protein (CRP).
Dr. Essam Al-Jumaili was honoured by the President of the Arab Chemists Union Society, Dr. Sayed Mishal, with the conference shield as well as the conference certificate of participation.
