Institute of Genetic Engineering: 25 Years of Leadership and Scientific Excellence in Iraq

The Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology for Postgraduate Studies was established in 1999 at the University of Baghdad, becoming the first and only institute in Iraq specializing in this vital and rare field. The institute consists of two main departments: Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, offering graduate programs that include Higher Diplomas, Master’s, and Doctorate degrees. The institute launched its Master’s program in 2000, followed by the Ph.D. program in 2002, along with the Higher Diploma program in the same year.

To date, the number of the institute’s graduates has reached approximately 1,000, all holding advanced degrees in this important discipline. The institute stands as a prominent scientific beacon in Iraq, focusing on the development of knowledge and research in the fields of genetic engineering and biotechnology. It serves as a primary source for supplying state institutions with specialized personnel capable of meeting market demands.

The institute aims to prepare scientific cadres in line with the latest developments in the fields of genetic engineering and its applications in medicine, agriculture, and industry. It also emphasizes advanced scientific research, with students conducting projects aimed at providing innovative solutions to health, agricultural, and environmental challenges. The institute serves as a platform for fostering innovation in gene-related fields and it promotes collaboration between academics, researchers, and industry to achieve sustainable scientific and technological progress.

Over the past 25 years, the institute has contributed consultancy services and research projects in cooperation with state institutions, reaffirming its ongoing commitment to serving the community and the nation, while providing the necessary support to achieve sustainable human and economic development in Iraq.

In conclusion, the institute reaffirms its steadfast commitment to serving the nation, the university, and the community with sincere efforts. We pray to God for success and guidance.
