The Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology for Postgraduate Studies/University of Baghdad held a training course entitled “Mastering Paraphrasing and Summarizing Skills for Academics” by three lecturers, namely Lecturer Dr. “Wissam Hazem Salo”, Lecturer Dr. “Rami Ali Taqi”, and Lecturer Dr. “Safaa Abdul Rasool”, while Assistant Lecturer “Rand Qusay Majeed” was the chair of the session and Assistant Lecturer “Rasul Muwaffaq” was the rapporteur.
The Dean of the Institute, Professor Dr. “Salwa Jaber Al-Awadi”, attended the course activities in which a number of professors and members of the Institute participated.
The course aimed to enable participants to improve their writing and communication skills by learning how to rephrase texts effectively.
The course addressed the ultimate goal of avoiding plagiarism and how to rephrase information in new ways to avoid copying texts directly, as well as clarifying ideas as an improvement in the ability to express ideas clearly and in multiple ways, and also developing vocabulary by enhancing the stock of words and phrases by searching for appropriate alternatives for each concept.
The course recommended the necessity of conducting diverse reading through reading a lot on different topics that help develop the writing style and improve vocabulary.
It also recommended training in rephrasing by conducting an experiment to rewrite paragraphs in different ways to improve your ability to express yourself.
The course emphasized the use of linguistic revision tools by using linguistic revision tools to correct spelling and grammatical errors.
