The Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology for Postgraduate Studies at the University of Baghdad organized an educational scientific seminar titled “The Dangers of Drugs,” presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Abdul Mohsen Muslim Shami, a faculty member at the institute. The seminar was chaired by Dr. Ahmed Saadi Khalaf, with Rasha Taha, Assistant Agricultural Engineer, serving as the rapporteur.
The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs, the underlying reasons that drive individuals to consume or abuse them, as well as methods of prevention and treatment.
The seminar introduced a range of concepts and definitions related to the topic, such as addiction—viewed as both a psychological and sometimes physiological condition resulting from a person’s interaction with drugs, characterized by specific responses and behavioral patterns.
The workshop also discussed the classifications of drugs, including natural, synthetic, and semi-synthetic types, along with the various forms of drug abuse and the factors that lead individuals to drug use.
The workshop recommended a series of crucial stages for drug rehabilitation and treatment, including psychological, social, practical, and community reintegration efforts.
It also called for the establishment of a dedicated anti-drug law and emphasized the important roles that families must play in addressing and mitigating this threat.
