Under the patronage of the Dean of the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology for Postgraduate Studies / University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Salwa Jaber Al-Awadi, a specialized training workshop entitled “Methods for Treating Chemical Waste in Laboratories” was held.
The workshop was delivered by Dr. Yasser Hossam Sabah, Lecturer, with Prof. Dr. Abdul-Mohsen Muslim Shami, Assistant Professor, serving as the session chair, and Prof. Dr. Zainab Hikmat, Assistant Professor, as the rapporteur.
The workshop aimed to highlight chemical waste and the proper and safe methods of handling it, in addition to introducing chemical waste in general and explaining preventive measures and laboratory disposal methods to avoid the risks associated with such waste.
The workshop emphasized the importance of proper handling of toxic waste and the necessity of taking strict safety measures.
It recommended the support and activation of laboratory safety regulations, the implementation of strict waste management practices, and the adoption of standardized procedures for the collection, classification, treatment, and safe disposal of toxic chemical and biological waste.
The workshop also stressed the importance of raising awareness and enhancing training among all laboratory personnel to ensure responsible handling of hazardous waste.
This workshop directly contributes to Sustainable Development Goals 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and 3 (Good Health and Well-being), and indirectly supports SDGs 4, 6, and 9 through promoting laboratory safety, environmental protection, and capacity building.
