Under the patronage of the Dean of the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology for Postgraduate Studies / University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Salwa Jaber Al-Awadi, a scientific seminar entitled “Newborn Screening Tests” was held.

The seminar was delivered by Ms. Seham Hamil, Assistant Lecturer, while Dr. Rami Ali Taqi, Lecturer, served as the session chair. Ms. Duaa Aboud, Assistant Lecturer, also participated in the seminar.

The seminar aimed to introduce newborn screening tests, which involve the early detection of genetic and rare diseases, thereby enabling rapid treatment and preventing disease complications.

The seminar recommended spreading awareness posters and encouraging parents to conduct these screening tests, in addition to increasing the number of screening tests rather than limiting them to only three tests.

From a scientific research perspective, the seminar also recommended encouraging students to conduct research on newborn screening tests, due to their importance for the future health of children.

This seminar directly contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by promoting early detection of genetic and rare diseases in newborns, and indirectly supports SDGs 4, 9, and 10 through enhancing scientific awareness, encouraging research, and promoting equitable access to diagnostic services.
